'JuVi'nile

Its like eternity isnt it.. Its the longest holiday the blog has taken ever since we started - a spine chilling silence uniformly maintained by all of us :) Nalla unity makkaley, lets get it back on tract with the same unity.

Here is some food for thought, and lets see how much of us are really hifi IQ guys. I am sure I am testing the tongs in the right community - so please prove me right. This is an excerpt from a magazine, so courtesy XYZ. I would be surprised if some of you had already read it, if so, then please refrain from spoiling the fun :-)

Read the below very carefully, u dont have to read between the lines but you will have to read through the lines well :)

1. I always speak of the truth. I have 2 coins with me. The cumulative sum of both the coins is 75paise. I promise you that one is not 50paise, then what would be the value of each of the coins - please bear in mind we follow the normal RBI statuatory and no coin value other than standard are being considered.

2. 5 + 5 + 5 = 550? Adding one more line to this expression would make it a balanced equation. What and where is that

3. Clerk: "Raghav, your next"
Raghav: "Coming sir....."
Raghav rushes to the door and stumbles at the doorstep and all his files and papers scatter on the floor.

Interviewer: "Raghav!! What is this!!!!?"
Raghav gave an answer that the interviewer bought and inturn was very impressed that he recruited Raghave inspite of his mess up at the entrance. What do you think is the reply that Raghav gave?

4. 2 Brothers took part in a 100m race. The elder brother won the race by 10m. Now, the younger brother who was disappointed asks the elder brother for a rematch.

In this race, the elder brother stands 10m behind the younger brother to make up for the lost distance last time.

Now who do you think will win this round? Explain...

5. An electric train runs at a speed of 90km/h. The train heads from east to west, which direction do you think the smoke emitted would travel. Remember, the train is travelling at this pace with all passengers inside.

These were some simple and astonishing questions that I came across this last weekend while surfing through the pages at home. Do introduce your own riddles that are in similar lines and lets understand how many of us have the acumen to pick the hidden catch.

  1. My answers,

    1. I always speak of the truth. I have 2 coins with me. The cumulative sum of both the coins is 75paise. I promise you that one is not 50paise, then what would be the value of each of the coins - please bear in mind we follow the normal RBI statuatory and no coin value other than standard are being considered.

    Ans: coin1 : 25p coin2: 50p.. One coin is not 50p. coin1 is not 50p.

    2. 5 + 5 + 5 = 550? Adding one more line to this expression would make it a balanced equation. What and where is that

    Ans: adding one line rite? strike "=" with a line. It ll become not-equal. 5 + 5 + 5 not-equals 550:)

Ans: "Sir, I made easy for u to hv a glance on my certificates easily" :D

    4. 2 Brothers took part in a 100m race. The elder brother won the race by 10m. Now, the younger brother who was disappointed asks the elder brother for a rematch.

In this race, the elder brother stands 10m behind the younger brother to make up for the lost distance last time.

Now who do you think will win this round? Explain...

    Ans:
Lets assume the elder brother took 100 minutes to complete the race,

Tat means, Elder-bro travels at 1m/minute and yonger-bro travels at 0.9m/minute.

    Now, Elder-bro has to travle 110m and younger-bro 100.

Elder brother will take 110 minutes to complete while Younger-bro will cover only 0.9*110 = 99 meters.
    Younger-bro will be short by 1 m.

    So, Elder-bro ll win :)

    5. An electric train runs at a speed of 90km/h. The train heads from east to west, which direction do you think the smoke emitted would travel. Remember, the train is travelling at this pace with all passengers inside.

Ans: From South to North ;) smoke always goes upwards, i guess.

@sentil: What are the correct answers?

  5. hmm...i am not sure of all the answers.. but i think i have d answer fr 2nd one.
5+5+5=550. one line is attached to one of the plus which makes it 4. so 545+5=550 .. i hope this shud work :)

Also i have 2 perspectives on the 4th one ..

    1. the elder brother still wins since the race is fr 100m. so it doesnt matter how far behind the elder goes. eppadi irundhaalum adhae 100 mtrs dhaana ..

    2. both of them win the race. since the brother runs fr extra 10 meters.. i think that shud do ..

  6. Those are a couple of interesting shots :).. I appreciate your intuitive thinking peria

    ReplyDelete
  7. On the 4th one, is that ur best shot buddy :)

  8. @peria: Both cant win... Only the elder brother can win.. speed matters.. I ll justify more clearly..

    Race length : 100 mts

It is given that younger-brother is short by 10mts, when elder brother finishes t 100 mts race.

It means that younger brother covered only 90 mts.

So, Lets assume that elder brother takes x minutes to complete.

    we know,
    Speed = distance/timetaken

    Then,
Speed of Elder brother = 100/x
Speed of Younger brother = 90/x

    Race2:

Here Elder brother has to run 110 mts.. and younger brother has to run 100 mts.

So, time taken to complete the race by elder brother is,

    time = Distance/Speed
    = 110/ (100/x)
    = 110x/100
    = 1.1x

time taken to complete the race by younger brother is,

    time = Distance/Speed
    = 100/ (90/x)
    = 100x/90
    = 1.1111X

    Lets compare both the times,

Time taken by elder brother/Time taken by younger brother

    = 1.1x/1.11x
    = 1.1/1.11 (x cancelled)
    = 0.99

    which is <1.
The ratio has to be >1 if younger brother wants to win
and equal=1 if both finishes together.

So, Elder brother will win the second race.

  9. That is a very good explanation. I would have to give this away to Hari. Lets reveal one question after another. The first of them being this mathematical one....

Hari's explanation is kind of touching the nose from around the neck, but I still support it as it is a DUMMIES explanation with complete derivation.

If you look @ it from a birds view, the younger brother is 10 metres short in the first race and he asks his elder brother to stand back 10 metres in the rematch to compensate. Now, every 10 metres that they run the elder brother encloses the younger brother by a metre.

So which means the difference falls short by 1 metre for every 10 metres. During the 10th metre the elder brother actually crosses the younger brother and thats when he wins him by a fraction at the end of the race. That fraction value is 0.1111 as Hari had calculated it :)

  10. I guess our friends are a lil preoccupied... its worth waiting another day to see some more brain storms :)

    ReplyDelete
  11. Hari u seriously are a brain racker man..! Great job - most of what u had cracked where the exact rip off of the right answers :)

    1. Most of us might get mislead at the phrase where it reads "one of them is not 50p" - so which means the other coin is the trick and its denomination is 50p. Well i didnt get this one right nor do many who fail to listen/read carefully

  12. 2nd Q - Peria got it right, her first attempt of adding the line diagonally top to the '+' makes it

    545 + 5 = 550 and hence it balances

    ReplyDelete
  13. The 3rd one is a monster.!

None of us could possibly even get close to cracking it as it is a big time bully...

    Raghav: "Sir...'This' is a pronoun" !!!! X-/

  14. The 5th one was probably one of the easiest - and I managed to get it right when i read it and so did Hari.

It was bit of fun wasnt it - these maneuvering questions

    ReplyDelete
  15. yep.. it was interesting :) :) Wat abt my answer to the 2nd question ?? Is that correct?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Yes definitely it does give u the solution. But not the desirable one :)

It is like ur saying.."Dont cry baby, we will grab the next door baby's chocolate and throw that away also :).."

  17. he he :D :D Good Example :) :)
