ReplyDelete@Karthi: Ya this year even though went busy coz I was there only last three days still was damn boring not to have any of my friends :(
@Jeff: Thanku :) Idhu romba over, that photo is there in computer table :)
@Senthil: Non-brahmins also have the habit of keeping it.
@Hari and all:
The actualy story might be known by all, but putting it in one line, in order to kill Mahishasur, Devi had to do penance for nine days to gain enough strength to kill him on the tenth day.
The actual logic behind keeping the golu in which all god's idol's and even human being idols can be kept is the fact that "The Shakthi" that murdered mahishan was formed by a part of brahma, vishnu, shiva and all deva's and is beleived to have had ten hands and acquired all the weapons from all different people as mahishan was so strong. Even with such a big Shakthi, nine days penance had to be done to kill him.
The first three days are dedicated for Lord Durga -> the source of power, and the next three to Lord Lakshmi -> source of wealth and the last three -> the source of wisdom, symbolising the significance of all three for ultimate Shakthi.
Golu vekkaradhoda aidheegam enna na people beleive that by keeping it "The Shakthi" meditates in the home itself bringing all the three things to the home. A small titbit here: My mom used to tell that nobody should even raise voice and speak or fight in the house these ten days because the lord is meditating :P
This is the same reason for which the Kalasam[I do not know much about this] when kept the golu should not be disturbed.
The ninth day is celebrated as main day for Saraswathi where she goes to full penance, meaning we are not supposed to study or do work on that day because Saraswathi is in a full concentrated state[practically impossible though]. It is very auspicious to call kanika girls and give them beetel leaf and lunch on ninth or tenth day. Will be really nice they will do all the things the girls ask for :P so nice for the girls :)
The tenth day called Vijayadashami is the day on which Shakthi kills mahishan and returns back victoriously, so anything started on that day is beleived will turn most victorious -> every year we do everything that we perform like studying, singing, dancing on this day. We write all languages alphabets and our names in all languages to symbolise start of using them. It is considered very auspicious to join for any class on this day and so a baby is usually made to write its first letter on this day.
On the tenth day we prepare neer more and panagam[kind of vellam water]. This is done thinking that it will cool down the angry Lord. Then the golu is taken off.
I have one unanswered question, why to do this every year??!! Mahishan has already been killed na :P so this is all just a belief. And as Senthil says it is a great gathering event and keeping those dolls and all will be loved by kids and girls a lot :)
PS: This is fully a girls festival ;)
kids and girls ku matum than pudikuma... yen boysku pudikadha??
ReplyDeleteI have never seen a guy as much interested as a kid or a girl :) For guys it is all about doing work ;) so possibly many will be sad that the festival is nearing.
